DAVID WHITEHEAD

APAC TACTICAL MARKETING manager • music tech Leader • DJ • producer

A Music Tech Marketing Legend that is himself also a Creative, DJ and Producer. David Whitehead has spent over two decades living at the intersection of music, technology, and culture — not as a bystander, but as a DJ, producer, broadcaster, brand builder, and educator who has shaped how artists, students, and audiences connect with sound. Few people can move between the studio, the stage, the classroom, and the boardroom with equal fluency. David is one of them. A lifelong DJ and producer, David began his career behind the decks and on the airwaves, founding Auckland’s high-energy radio station UP FM at just 20 years old after completing his internship at George FM. He performed at clubs and festivals across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK before transitioning into the business side of music, where his instinctive market knowledge and creative thinking found a natural home.

David is a Sydney-based music technology marketing leader, DJ, producer, and educator whose career spans radio broadcasting, retail leadership, product management, and global brand strategy. Born and raised in New Zealand, he graduated from the New Zealand Broadcasting School before throwing himself into Auckland's electronic music scene, eventually founding UP FM, a high-energy Auckland radio station, at just 20 years old, having already completed his internship at the legendary George FM. He performed at clubs and festivals across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK, building a first-hand understanding of how music moves people that has underpinned everything he has done since. That performer's instinct followed him into the business world. At Allans Music and Billy Hyde, he managed some of NSW's largest music retail spaces, developing teams and mentoring a new generation of sales and product specialists. As Category Manager for Music Technology at Australian Music Group, he deepened his expertise across the full technology landscape before joining Roland, where he has spent nearly a decade shaping one of the world's most iconic music instrument brands. He progressed through Digital Marketing Specialist, Product Manager for Synth, DJ and Music Production, and Marketing Manager for Roland Australia, before stepping into his current role as Tactical Marketing Manager for Roland Asia Pacific, where he leads cross-regional strategies across Roland, BOSS, and V-MODA for Oceania and beyond. As a creator, David has never stopped making. His work as a DJ and producer gives him a perspective that most marketing professionals simply cannot offer: he understands gear not just from a commercial angle but from the deeply personal experience of using it to build sounds, craft sets, and move a room. He has written extensively for the Roland Resource Centre on topics ranging from crafting a great DJ set and getting your first club gigs to integrating Roland hardware with Ableton Live, using Roland Boutique gear in a studio context, and creating synth sounds for dance styles, a body of practical, hands-on editorial work that reflects a genuine working knowledge of production and performance at every level. A particular focus of David's creative knowledge is the journey from studio to stage with technically complex, synth-based and computer-produced music. Taking a production built from software plugins, MIDI sequences, and studio processing and transforming it into a compelling live show requires a very specific set of skills: MIDI syncing across hardware and software, building and triggering backing tracks reliably in a live context, designing a show structure that creates moments and maintains energy, and making gear choices that enhance the sonic identity you built in the studio rather than flatten it. This is territory David has navigated personally and guided artists through, and it sits at the heart of what he brings to mentoring emerging electronic music producers who are ready to take their work off the hard drive and onto the stage. His passion for engaging young people in electronic music is equally central to his work. In 2025, David spearheaded Roland's partnership with MusicEDU to launch Making Beats, a curriculum-based program designed to bring electronic music production into secondary school classrooms for Years 7 to 10. Built around beatmaking and the music students actually listen to, hip-hop, electronic, and pop, the program gives teachers a ready-to-deliver pathway into contemporary music creation aligned with curriculum requirements, with Roland's AIRA Compact series at its core. Launching at the ASME National Conference in Brisbane in September 2025, it generated immediate interest from schools planning rollout in Term 4 and into 2026. The program reflects a long-standing personal conviction: that the gap between the music young people love and the music they are taught to make in school is a problem worth solving.
David also contributed to the Electronic Music Council's Studio to Stage toolkit, a comprehensive guide for emerging electronic music creators in Australia and Asia-Pacific, appearing alongside Nina Las Vegas, Tom Cameron from Ableton, and Angus Russell from Gallery Recordings. His commitment to accessible, community-driven education runs through everything he does, from hands-on school programs to artist collaborations, university partnerships, and the brand campaigns that have helped define Roland's creative identity in the Australian market..
